TheQuietHouse
安静的房子
MrsDovetailwasburiedinthegraveyardintheCity-Within-The-City,wheregenerationsofroyalservantslay.Daisyandherfatherstoodhand-in-hand,lookingdownatthegrave,foralongtime.BertkeptlookingbackatDaisyashistearfulmotherandgrim-facedfatherledhimslowlyaway.Bertwantedtosaysomethingtohisbestfriend,butwhathadhappenedwastooenormousanddreadfulforwords.Bertcouldhardlybeartoimaginehowhe’dfeelifhismotherhaddisappearedforeverintothecold,hardearth.
豆文太奥女士被葬在城内之城的墓地，那里埋葬着数代皇家侍仆。黛西和她的父亲手牵着手，站在那注视着墓碑很久，很久。波特回首一直望着身后的黛西，直到满眼泪水的母亲和一脸肃穆的父亲慢慢把他带走。波特很想对最好的朋友说些什么，但发生的事是如此的巨大和沉痛，难以用语言表达。波特禁不住像如果自己的母亲永远消失在冰冷坚硬的地下，自己会什么感受。
Whenalltheirfriendshadgone,MrDovetailmovedthepurplewreathsentbythekingawayfromMrsDovetail’sheadstone,andputinitsplacethesmallbunchofsnowdropsthatDaisyhadcollectedthatmorning.ThenthetwoDovetailswalkedslowlyhometoahousetheyknewwouldneverbethesameagain.
当所有的亲朋好友离去，豆文太奥先生把国王送来的紫色花圈从墓碑上拿走，并把一小把雪花莲放了上去，这是黛西那天早晨搜集的。随后，两人缓慢走回再也不会和之前一样的家。
Aweekafterthefuneral,thekingrodeoutofthepalacewiththeRoyalGuardtogohunting.Asusual,everyonealonghisroutecamerushingoutintotheirgardenstobow,curtsy,andcheer.Asthekingbowedandwavedback,henoticedthatthefrontgardenofonecottageremainedempty.Ithadblackdrapesatthewindowsandthefrontdoor.
一周后，国王和往常一样，皇家侍卫随同他外出王宫打猎。行程路线上的所有人冲出房屋在花园里向国王，或鞠躬，行或礼，或欢呼。当国王鞠躬并挥手致意时，他发现了前排有一个房子的花园里空无一人。房屋的窗户和前门上悬挂着黑色布条。
‘Wholivesthere?’heaskedMajorBeamish.
“谁住在哪？”国王问梅杰比姆世。
‘That–that’stheDovetailhouse,YourMajesty,’saidBeamish.
“那，那是豆文太奥的房子，陛下，”比姆世说。
‘Dovetail,Dovetail,’saidtheking,frowning.‘I’veheardthatname,haven’tI?’
“豆文太奥，豆文太奥，我听说过这个名字吧，不是吗？”国王皱眉思考道。
‘Er…yes,sire,’saidMajorBeamish.‘MrDovetailisYourMajesty’scarpenterandMrsDovetailis–was–YourMajesty’sHeadSeamstress.’
“额，是的，陛下，”比姆世说，“豆文太奥先生是您的木匠，豆文太奥女士是-曾是-您的头号女裁缝。”
‘Ah,yes,’saidKingFredhurriedly,‘I–Iremember.’
“额，是的，我，我想起来了。”国王急忙说。
Andspurringhismilk-whitechargerintoacanter,herodeswiftlypasttheblack-drapedwindowsoftheDovetailcottage,tryingtothinkofnothingbuttheday’shuntingthatlayahead.
然后国王刺踢了他的奶白骏马，让马小跑起来，迅速骑行经过豆文太奥那悬挂黑色布条的房屋，国王试着什么也不想，可是那天的事一直在眼前回旋。
Buteverytimethekingrodeoutafterthat,hecouldn’thelpbutfixhiseyesontheemptygardenandtheblack-drapeddooroftheDovetailresidence,andeverytimehesawthecottage,theimageofthedeadseamstressclutchingthatamethystbuttoncamebacktohim.Finally,hecouldbearitnolonger,andsummonedtheChiefAdvisortohim.
之后，王国每次骑行外出，他都禁不住把目光移到那空空如也的花园，还有那悬挂黑色布条的房屋，每次国王看到那个房屋，女裁缝手里拿着紫晶石纽扣死亡的画面总是近在眼前。他再也受不了了，于是传唤了首席智囊团。
‘Herringbone,’hesaid,notlookingtheoldmanintheeye,‘there’sahouseonthecorner,onthewaytothepark.Ratheranicecottage.Large-ishgarden.’
“贺瑞磅，”国王说，但没有看那老人的眼睛，“在去猎场的路上，在角上，有个很不错的房子，大大的花园。”
‘TheDovetailhouse,YourMajesty?’
“那是豆文太奥的房子，陛下？”

“哦，是他住在那，是吗？”国王轻轻的说。“恩，我突然想到对于一个小家庭来说那是个相当大的地方。我听说只有两人住在那里，对吗？”

“非常对，陛下，只有两人，自从她妈妈——”
‘Itdoesn’treallyseemfair,Herringbone,’KingFredsaidloudly,‘forthatnice,spaciouscottagetobegiventoonlytwopeople,whentherearefamiliesoffiveorsix,Ibelieve,who’dbehappywithalittlemoreroom.’
“这看起来不太公平，贺瑞磅，”国王大声说道，“那个不错的宽阔的房子仅仅给两个人住，我相信有五六人的家庭会很开心有个大点儿空间的。”
‘You’dlikemetomovetheDovetails,YourMajesty?’
“您想让我使豆文太奥一家搬家么，陛下？”
‘Yes,Ithinkso,’saidKingFred,pretendingtobeveryinterestedinthetipofhissatinshoe.
‘Verywell,YourMajesty,’saidtheChiefAdvisor,withadeepbow.‘IshallaskthemtoswapwithRoach’sfamily,whoI’msurewouldbegladofmorespace,andIshallputtheDovetailsintheRoaches’house.’
“是的，我感觉可以这样，”弗雷德说道，假装着对他那缎纹鞋尖很感兴趣。
“好的，陛下，”首席智囊团说着鞠了个很深的躬。“我会要求他们与罗池一家交换的，我相信罗池他们拥有大点的地方会很开心，我会让豆文一家住在罗池的房子的。”
‘Andwhereisthat,exactly?’askedthekingnervously,forthelastthinghewantedwastoseethoseblackdrapesevennearerthepalacegates.
“他家在哪？准确点”国王急切的问道，因为他再也不想在王宫门前看到那些黑色的布条。
‘RightontheedgeoftheCity-Within-The-City,’saidtheChiefAdvisor.‘Veryclosetothegraveyard,inf—’

‘Thatsoundssuitable,’interruptedKingFred,leapingtohisfeet.‘Ihavenoneedofdetails.Justmakeithappen,Herringbone,there’sagoodchap.’
“听起来挺合适，”国王跺脚打断了首席的说话，“我不需要知道细节，你赶快去办吧，贺瑞磅，那儿不错。”
Andso,DaisyandherfatherwereinstructedtoswaphouseswiththefamilyofCaptainRoach,who,likeBert’sfather,wasamemberoftheking’sRoyalGuard.ThenexttimeKingFredrodeout,theblackdrapeshadvanishedfromthedoorandtheRoachchildren–fourstrappingbrothers,theoneswho’dfirstchristenedBertBeamish‘Butterball’–camerunningintothefrontgardenandjumpedupanddown,cheeringandwavingCornucopianflags.KingFredbeamedandwavedbackattheboys.Weekspassed,andKingFredforgotallabouttheDovetails,andwashappyagain.
因此，黛西和父亲被迫与罗池一家交换房子，罗池像黛西父亲一样也是皇家侍卫的成员。等下次国王弗雷德骑马外出去打猎时，哪些黑色布条消失了，取而代之的是，罗池的孩子——那是四个强壮的男孩，其中一个还是第一个给波特去黄油球绰号的人——他们跑到前面的花园，跳上跳下，挥舞着国旗，欢呼呐喊着。国王向这些男孩挥手致意。几周过去了，弗雷德已经忘记了豆文太奥那一档子事，又变的开心起来。
